The Dream Shall Never Die

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Tonight, please light a candle in your window to memorialize Senator Kennedy.

This is the cause of my life. It is a key reason that I defied my illness last summer to speak at the Democratic convention in Denver—to support Barack Obama, but also to make sure, as I said, “that we will break the old gridlock and guarantee that every American…will have decent, quality health care as a fundamental right and not just a privilege.” For four decades I have carried this cause—from the floor of the United States Senate to every part of this country. It has never been merely a question of policy; it goes to the heart of my belief in a just society. Now the issue has more meaning for me—and more urgency—than ever before. But it’s always been deeply personal, because the importance of health care has been a recurrent lesson throughout most of my 77 years.

Helicopter Parents

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

So, I haven’t ranted in a while. Let me break that trend.
Why the hell are parents so over-concerned about their children any more? If they actually cared for the well-being of their children, they’d let them do stuff on their own. That is how we learn. We fail, and try again.helicopter parents
“Helicopter” parents is a term being used to describe these parents as they are constantly hovering around their kids like a helicopter does. It’s actually quite fitting.
Are our nation’s youth so inept that they cannot handle basic tasks without mommy or daddy? I would wager not. The youth are highly intelligent and are smarter than the generation of youth before them, who were smarter than than the generation before them and so forth.
So, why then are parents so incapable of letting their kids off the leash?
Maybe it’s the news. The news is always putting out the most horrific stories trying to keep an already brain-wasted audience. Maybe these parents watched too much of Fox news and are afraid of the evil-doers that want to take our freedom. Who knows?
helicopter_parents1I know one problem is the cell phone often referred to as the world’s longest umbilical cord. I’m not against cell phones. I’ve saved 2 lives on two separate occasions because I happened to have a cell phone on me. I’m against the abuse of cell phones. Helicopter parents abuse cell phones the worst. Give your kids some slack. You survived childhood without one right? So why the concern all of the sudden?
A message to these parents: Lighten up. You are wasting away what little life your child has. Let them learn things on their own. I’m not saying detach. I’m saying to lead by example, not by actually performing on behalf of. I guarantee your kids will thank you for it.

Note: This is a message from a parent.
