I’m sure you’ve all heard about the football player, Ryan Moats, who was pulled over because he ran a red light on his way to see his dying mother-in-law. If not, here are a few articles (1400 or so) about it: news.google.com. Public outrage has ensued and everybody wants the head of the police officer who did this. Don’t get me wrong, I do too. I think the officer acted in a manner not in accordance with humanity. I think our officers need to be trained in compassion and common sense. I understand that they are under intense pressure and never know what the next traffic stop might bring… nonetheless, I think unique judgment about each situation is important.
This is another good example of our authoritarian state that we reside in. Shoot first, ask questions later. Do what we say, do not question us. We know what is right for you. You obviously do not. Too many people are just a tad comfortable to go out and do anything though. U.S. of Apathy is what we should be renamed. What, with On-Demand, Xbox 360, Desperate Housewives and American Idol we really have no need to do anything. Our lives our content just enough to not want to change things. We are just happy enough with our miserable existence to not want to stand up against wrong doings like this and the torrents of others that take place every day within our neighborhoods and our country. When I see BS like this everyday I am sickened. Not by the loss of Mr. Moats and his family (I am truly sorry for their loss though) am I sickened. No, I am sickened that another instance of abuse of power has happened and that not a single person has stood up against “the man.” It is as if “the man” is flaunting their authoritarian abuse in front of us asĀ a joke and we sit back and take each and every blow.
